Decades of Teamwork
Viega has been a proud supporter of PPI’s efforts for nearly 30 years. Viega has been involved with PPI’s Building and Construction Division since its inception in 1998, supporting research and development with industry knowledge and experience. “No matter what committee we have or what type of task group we put together, it’s pretty much guaranteed there’s going to be somebody from Viega involved,” says MacNevin. Viega understands that plastic piping is a durable, cost-effective alternative to metal pipe,
and we back PPI’s efforts to prove that with a commitment to education and innovation.
Jason McKinnon, Viega’s Director of Engineering Services and Chair of PPI’s Education Committee, plays a crucial role in promoting educational initiatives that highlight the benefits of plastic piping. McKinnon and others from Viega work directly with PPI to engage engineers, contractors and specifiers in addressing concerns and expanding the use of plastic piping.
The Next Frontier
Plastic pipes have become the go-to for residential plumbing, with PEX accounting for about two-thirds of the hot- and cold-water distribution piping in new home construction in the U.S. and Canada. However, the commercial sector still largely relies on metal piping, particularly copper. MacNevin notes that the next challenge for the industry is gaining acceptance in commercial applications, where specifiers and engineers are still hesitant. “Our main focus is on education to increase acceptance of plastic pipes in commercial applications,” shared MacNevin. He added that by educating engineers and code officials
Preparing Tomorrow’s Professionals
All this growth and innovation in the industry is only as good as the people doing the work. To ensure workers’ skills are keeping pace with industry changes, PPI recently launched an Emerging Professionals Group designed to mentor young professionals in the industry. MacNevin says, “It’s exciting to see a new generation getting involved, forming a network where they can learn and share knowledge about plastic piping.” This group explores new ways to advocate for plastic piping, potentially utilizing platforms like TikTok to reach broader audiences—something that could help PPI navigate today’s fast-paced digital landscape.
A Vision for Tomorrow
Looking forward, the plastic piping industry is focused on sustainability and expanding into new areas like renewable energy applications. MacNevin explained that PPI aims to “advocate for the increased acceptance of plastic pipe” while ensuring that plastic piping remains a sustainable choice through research and innovation. PPI’s ongoing efforts include creating new standards, publishing technical resources and addressing public concerns about the environmental impact of plastic. Sustainability is a top priority at Viega, and we will continue to support organizations like PPI that are dedicated to educating our customers on these flexible, durable and sustainable materials.
The journey of plastic piping from a “short-term solution” to an industry standard is a testament to innovation, collaboration and perseverance. Thanks to PPI’s dedication to standards and advocacy and Viega’s commitment to education and innovation, plastic piping has become an essential component of modern plumbing and heating systems. As we continue to work together, the possibilities for plastic piping are limitless, from tackling commercial applications to engaging the next generation of piping professionals.
Thanks to the research, development and advocacy efforts of the Plastics Pipe Institute — backed by Viega’s expertise and educational contributions — plastic piping has gone from a temporary fix to a massive presence in plumbing and heating systems.
